Satischandra Chatterjee, Dhirendramohan Datta - An Introduction to Indian Philosophy - 2018
The object of this book is to provide a simple introduction to the Indian systems of philosophy. Each one of these systems has had a vast and varied development. Attempt has been made to introduce the listener to the spirit and outlook of Indian philosophy and help him to grasp thoroughly the central ideas rather than acquaint him with minute details. Modern students of philosophy feel many difficulties in understanding the Indian problems and theories. Their long experience with university students has helped the authors to realise these, and they have tried to remove them as far as possible. This accounts for most of the critical discussions which could otherwise have been dispensed with.

Many thanks, Abee - I’ve been trying to grasp this area of knowledge just recently, so serendipity-do-dah! Your uploads are always enlightening.

Cool! I’ve studied my Eastern philosophy by this book only in Russian translation. Soviets were friendly with India sometime in the 50-60s, when it had socialist government, so this book was translated. Thank you!

@Mria - Zdravstvujtye! Surprising that the Soviets permitted any form of exposure to religious speculation. I know that during the period a lot of materials were, by necessity, samizdat. The officials must not have perused the work too closely!

@caesar963 - Hi! :) They researched all religions from the atheistic scientific position and it was state-approved. Religion was allowed in USSR (after they’d killed most of the priests and taken all the property), it was just strictly separated from the state, and you couldn’t be in the party and openly religious. In the end, the christian church was controlled by the State and infiltrated by the KGB, so it was known that many of the priests were KGB agents. This state-church merging continues and could be seen today with the Russian Orthodox church (and Muslim leaders), but today Russian government openly supports and supported by the main religious organizations.

Yeah, I think the Russian Orthodox church has always been too close to whatever regime was in power (not to say there aren’t great people within it). I wouldn’t like to be confessing to a KGB or FSB agent! Russians were very well educated, even under the Soviets. And there was always a rich and fascinating literary tradition from which to draw (almost as good as that of Ireland!).
