Leonard Peikoff - Introduction of 35th anniversary edition….1991
Critics wrote…”Atlas Shrugged is absurd but strangely compelling. Ayn Rand’s libertarian rant is unpleasant, daft and deeply flawed. I hated it - but I couldn’t put it down….”
“Atlas Shrugged includes elements of science fiction, mystery, and romance, and it contains Rand’s most extensive in any of her works of fiction. …The book depicts a dystopian United States in which private businesses suffer under increasingly burdensome laws and regulations…..”
In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts?
This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world—and did. In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, he sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he have to fight his battle not against his enemies but against those who need him most? Why does he fight his hardest battle against the woman he loves? The answers will be revealed once you discover the reason behind the baffling events that wreak havoc on the lives of the amazing men and women in this remarkable book.
Tremendous in scope and breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand’s magnum opus, which launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon. Atlas Shrugged emerged as a premier moral apologia for capitalism, a defense that had an electrifying effect on millions of readers (and now listeners) who had never heard capitalism defended in other than technical terms.
Atlas Shrugged received largely negative reviews after its first publication, but achieved enduring popularity and ongoing sales in the following decades. After several unsuccessful attempts to adapt the novel for film or television, a film trilogy based on it was released from 2011 to 2014. These films were critical and box office failures
…. Narrator Scott Brick takes listeners on a journey so extraordinary they’ll hardly notice the book’s length. While his performance offers little in the way of theatrics, Brick is capable of garnering sympathy and, perhaps most importantly, devout attention for Rand’s plot and characters. On the surface, Brick’s voice is a cool, unrelenting force determined to capture every facet of Rand’s complex story. But amid his calm and collected delivery, he taps into a more colorful emotional palette that will keep listeners involved. Brick’s subtle delivery holds far more than meets the ear. L.B. Always an interesting read.
Definition of libertarian - someone who currently doesn’t need something from the government. Except roads, and police, and a defence force, and education, and…

I’m all for Scott Brick, but life is too short for this book. I’ll wait for the, um, one-page summary.
Oh, wait, it’s there already!

Never mind Ayn Rand, but 62:57:06 hrs of Scott Brick? No thanks.

Scott Brick is better than the older version that sounds like it was recorded on a wax cylinder by a drab old man in his 80’s. :D Thank you!

Fantastic book that remains a classic.
Today’s youth would do well to read this book about individual freedom vs government control and coercion

Don’t read/listen to it. No one cares.
Millions have read it, and loved it, and many more millions will in the future, read it.
Long after we all become snot tissue.

Thank you Thank you..
Have you got Fountain Head as well?
Poor sorry Marxists, can’t do anything but complain & attempt to censure what we read.
They should try reading before complaining, their educators opinions are just regurgitated clatter trap that was likely regurgitated by those that had indoctrinated them as well.
Read/Listen, and form an opinion of your own.

Thank you. I wonder how many of the people who waste their time bashing this book in the comments have actually bothered to read it? Seriously, unless you’re thanking someone for giving you a free book, stay out of the comments. Better yet, read it and maybe you’ll learn something.

Dystopian … and precisely what’s happening in our world today. Rand’s foresight was prophetic.

Neatly packed and organized. What a treat!
Many thanks.

This author has singularly convinced me that, cognitively, there are at least 2 entirely separate realities and most of you live in the inferior one where this is somehow a good book. You’re out of your minds.
