[Translated by Anthea Bell]
Hofmiller, an Austro-Hungarian cavalry officer stationed at the edge of the empire, is invited to a party at the home of a rich local landowner, a world away from the dreary routine of the barracks. The surroundings are glamorous, wine flows freely, and the exhilarated young Hofmiller asks his host’s lovely daughter for a dance, only to discover that sickness has left her painfully crippled. It is a minor blunder, yet one that will go on to destroy his life, as pity and guilt gradually implicate him in a well-meaning but tragically wrongheaded plot to restore the unhappy invalid to health.

I find myself ever more amazed that the recent - long overdue - rise in the reputation of Joseph Roth seems to be coinciding with English cultural amnesia around Stefan Zweig.
Probably both authors might have been better if they had been less accepting of the cultural moeurs they portrayed, but sometimes literature can be of value simply by remembering what it was like to be there.
Both authors are absolute masters at reminding us how the cultured, urbane, civilised Germans of the Belle Epoque stumbled into two disastrous wars and a taste for dictators.
A lesson that couldn’t be more urgent on both sides of the Atlantic right now.

Thanks.
I don’t suppose you have The Good Soldier Švejk by any chance? Have been keen to read it for some time.

How on earth did I miss this?!?
Every few days I trawl thru all the new books and D/L anything that appeals - yet I didn’t see this?
All rhetorical questions of course, and I’m pleased I asked or would have missed it all together. Many thanks and good reading to you jones!
