In this acclaimed number one national best-seller, one of our country’s most distinguished political philosophers argues that the social/political crisis of 20th-century America is really an intellectual crisisand shows how American democracy has hosted ideas of nihilism, despair, and relativism disguised as tolerance. Allan Bloom’s sweeping analysis is essential to understanding America today. It has fired the imagination of a public ripe for change.
THE BRILLIANT AND CONTROVERSIAL CRITIQUE OF AMERICAN CULTURE WITH NEARLY A MILLION COPIES IN PRINT
In 1987, eminent political philosopher Allan Bloom published The Closing of the American Mind, an appraisal of contemporary America that “hits with the approximate force and effect of electroshock therapy” (The New York Times) and has not only been vindicated, but has also become more urgent today. In clear, spirited prose, Bloom argues that the social and political crises of contemporary America are part of a larger intellectual crisis: the result of a dangerous narrowing of curiosity and exploration by the university elites.

This book was published back in 1987, imagine what the author would have to say about the subject now. Between Critical Race Theory/1619, biased social/public media, and a number of other more divisive topics, the author could have written a series of books on the subject.

From the guy who brought you such great takes as “rock and roll is what’s wrong with the world today”.

Excellent upload, thank you. One of the smartest works in the modern conservative canon. Unfortunate that Bloom was so fully embraced/absorbed into the neocon circles—a real favorite of Kristol/Podhoretz—but suppose it’s no great surprise for a direct Leo Strauss acolyte.

Martha Nussbaum’s response was enjoyably blistering: https://www.nybooks.com/articles/1987/11/05/undemocratic-vistas/

Bloom was one of a small minority of humanities professors that wasn’t a European culture loathing Cultural Bolshevik. Humanities scholars should respect the past, not castigate it.
