The best SF stories ( Nightfall, The Big Pat Boom …), like the greatest Historical novels (Vanity Fair, Romola …) are magic doors into the precise moment in history when they were written.
Nobody today thinks about the universe quite the way Carl Sagan did: ‘Contact’ is one of the few ways we can find a route back to that historic moment.
