Just finished listening to this and it is wonderful. I was brought to it by Donna Tartt’s memoir of her love for the book and her dealings with Charles Portis, printed in the NY Times this June. She wanted to read True Grit for this audiobook, though it’s unusual for successful authors to make recordings of other authors’ books. She tells how she cold-called Portis at his home in Arkansas to ask his permission and ended up in a long, aimless and delightful conversation. After a while she asked Portis if he’d like to hear her read, and he said “naw, you’ll make a fine Mattie,” and went on talking. Well, she does make a fine Mattie and I can’t imagine a better reader.

That’s a great story vaneyck. I only started reading Portis after he died but I wish I’d started sooner. Masters of Atlantis had me laughing all the way through and I didn’t want Dog of the South to end it was so enjoyable.
