Joel Warner’s ‘Curse of the Marquis De Sade’ - which you can also find on this site - is one of the best introductions I know to why De Sade matters. Or at least, matters if you are interested in free speech, or judicial accountability, or universal human rights.
I know that leaves a heap of people out.

I can’t imagine how an accurate translation could be produced in the woke era unless Justine has been gender swapped.

I find the notion that gender swapping renders a story of child sexual slavery “woke” to be both ignorant and disturbing. And I doubt Sade has ever been palatable, much less politically correct, in any era.
