“New truth is often uncomfortable,” Bertrand Russell wrote, “but it is the most important achievement of our species.” In Religion and Science (1961), his popular polemic against religious dogma, he covers the ground from demonology to quantum physics, yet concedes that science cannot touch the profound feelings of personal religious experience.

What about the blameless contractors who were working on the Death Star? Presumably apolitical, yet who grieves for them?

@ross - I saw that film over 20 years ago, but I still would’ve thought that the Death Star contractors argument came from Family Guy, or something like that.
There are other factors to think about -
There was likely a galactic recession caused by the ongoing war, and work on the super-weapon provided an unusual opportunity for large-scale employment. In such circumstances, one would not be in the privileged position of selecting one’s employers on the basis of ethical standards. Therefore we shouldn’t judge them.
Also, their efforts were probably segmented, so they were not in a position to form a view as to the purpose of the vessel (the actual name of the vessel is wholly immaterial).
The difficulty for their next of kin would have been that, as the unscrupulous
Rebellion would have conceived of their family members as “legitimate targets”, the route to reasonable compensation would have been rendered nigh-on impossible. A prospect that was far, far away.

A very quotable person, thanks for the chance to learn more about the man behind the quotes.

Now I’m blushing, roeyrboat! I appreciate your observations as well - there are some great recommendations in this section as a whole (in amongst all the angriness).

(I’m joking of course)
