Set in Florence in 1492, a time of great political and religious turmoil, Eliot’s novel blends vivid fictional characters with historical figures such as Savonarola, Machiavelli, and the Medicis. When Romola, the virtuous daughter of a blind scholar, marries Tito Melema, a charismatic young Greek, she is bound to a man whose escalating betrayals threaten to destroy all that she holds dear. Profoundly inspired by Savonarola’s teachings, then crushed by the religious leader’s ultimate failure, Romola finds her salvation in noble self-sacrifice.

Probably George Eliot’s most disturbing novel. Like any true classic it speaks to us from a time which didn’t yet know some truths we now take almost for granted (the perils of fundamentalist certainty, in this instance), but was far more comfortable with other truths we have now nearly forgotten (the need for common beliefs to focus the daily business of any functional society / community).
The balancing act between respecting other people’s beliefs, and conniving at their prejudices, is as ticklish a business now as it was in 1863, or 1497 for that matter.
Thank you, Euripides.

Cracker, thanks Euripides!

You’re welcome.
Disturbing and also the most insightful, I think. This and Felix Holt, the Radical are two of my favourite books by Eliot although they are a definite departure from the calming bucolic setting of her other books.

Love this book but is there a version by a different narrator? (not here I know but was another recorded?) Nadia May is a good but idiosyncratic reader and her stagey voice makes the long lush exposition difficult to take it. Thanks for any info.

There is anpther audible version read by Gabriel woolf … 2009. I much preferred the sample and will share if I ever get my paws on it. Meanwhile listening to the librovox version which is unfortunately a collaboraion of many readers. However some are superb and most are less distracting than Nadia May (who is talented so dont let my taste put you off this version … Plenty of others like it!0
