Samuel Richardson’s epistolary novel Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded, published in 1740, tells the story of a young woman’s resistance to the desires of her predatory master. Pamela is determined to protect her virginity and remain a paragon of virtue; however, the heroine’s moral principles only strengthen the resolve of Mr. B and Pamela soon finds herself imprisoned against her will. The young woman’s affection for her captor gradually grows and she becomes aware of a love that combines eros and agape.
Richardson’s classic novel created a sensation upon its publication: the novel’s radical departure from the traditional comic plot violated convention and its portrayal of a young female servant daring to assert herself proved to be even more controversial. Clare Corbett and cast read from the original, unrevised text that left an indelible mark on the conscience of an entire nation.

More than a little rapey, but that’s the British “conscience” for ya.

A little abducty too. It’s unbelievable that this was legal back then. And she falls for him! The ending is just horrid!

That could be what Die Hard mistakenly called “Helsinki Syndrome” - her predatory master is clearly one of those radical proto-feminists. Every time he tries to grope/rape her, she cunningly contrives a swoon/faint. That’s probably what outraged the original readers, that she was assertively affecting unconsciousness. What a confounded little Miss!

Believe it or not my English lit teacher, a wizened nun of very advanced age when she taught us (she must have been past 60 years in age, not exaggerating) gave us a list of literary classics to read in our lifetime. This was listed in the top five.
The BBC made a radio adaptation for their Classic Serial program with Sheridan Smith as Pamela and Tim Mcinerney as her master. It was adapted in the style of a Restoration comedy.

@mpt - It’s a safe bet that the wise nun wanted you to concentrate on the “Virtue Rewarded” angle, and not develop any bad “habits” so to speak (I apologise profusely).
Richardson’s ginormous novels were foisted on us in university, so they were still yuge.
