At its best the strength of the Gawain material is the way it challenges unquestioning loyalty (here, and in Malory, and a few other places, Iarlles y FFynhon may be a Gawain story in light disguise).
This is one of the great Arthur poems, but how well it is translated depends heavily on the translator’s decision on ‘child3ered’ (l. 86). Tolkien gets it comically wrong, Flynn isn’t my favourite reading, but I can see where he is coming from.
You need to know this poem, if you want to understand English poetry; and if you can’t read it in the original, this is the next best thing.
