Since its publication in 1960, William L. Shirer’s monumental study of Hitler’s German empire has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of the 20th century’s blackest hours. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.
Now, many years after the end of World War II, it may seem incredible that our most valued institutions and way of life were threatened by the menace that Hitler and the Third Reich represented. Shirer’s description of events and the cast of characters who played such pivotal roles in defining the course Europe was to take is unforgettable.
Benefiting from his many years as a reporter, and thus a personal observer of the rise of Nazi Germany, and availing himself of some of the 485 tons of documents from the German Foreign Office, as well as countless other diaries, phone transcriptions, and other written records, meticulously kept at every level by the Germans, Shirer has put together a brutally objective account of how Hitler wrested political control of Germany, and planned and executed his six-year quest to dominate the world, only to see Germany go down in flames.
This is a richly rewarding experience for anyone who wants to come to grips with the mysterious question of how this menace to civilization ever came into being, much less was sustained for as long as it was. The answer, unfortunately, is that most of Germany, for a whole host of reasons, embraced Nazism and the fanaticism that Hitler engendered.

Very good book written by a direct witness of the time, provides a lot of details about that period of time and subject.

See Thomas Childers’ new book,‘The Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany’ for a more accurate picture of the rise & fall of the Nazis.
Shirer’s book is a very dated book published in 1960, written by a journalist in the 1950s, relying on limited archival evidence, which he interpreted via the Great Man theory of historical change (to borrow Thomas Carlyle’s term).
Shirer’s book is a very easy-to-read book, to be sure, but it paints a very incomplete picture. A vast amount of relevant source material was not available to Shirer back in the 1950s, when he wrote this book, and our theoretical understanding of history and historical change was less nuanced and less rigorous and more susceptible to prejudices.
For a superbly readable alternative to Shirer’s account, check out ‘The Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany’ by Thomas Childers. It is written for the general public by an academic historian (with decades of specializing in the history of Nazi Germany) and it offers an up-to-date interpretation of the currently-available evidence.
(That last line might sound odd, but that is exactly what good historians do when writing history books: find all relevant evidence, and interpret that evidence in narrative form, without assuming they already know the narrative. In the process, historians will approach the projects with numerous hypotheses, some of which will be discarded in face of the evidence, and others will be confirmed and lead to further hypotheses, and ultimately theories to explain certain changes or certain aspects of changes. But unlike in sociology or political science, historians typically embed their theories inside historical narratives, and thus, theories within history books are seldom obvious unless readers are already familiar with the historiography of the given subject(s). TIP: it’s always worth reading the introductions or prefaces in academic history books because that is where you might learn about the historiography, and that is where historians are most likely to state explicitly their theories, and specify the texts they seek to counter or to supplement. Same goes for reading the annotated footnotes or endnotes. Oh, and I presume anyone reading those knows the difference between a hypothesis and a theory.)
