Jake, hack writer and sponger, now penniless flat-hunter, seeks out an old girlfriend, Anna Quentin, and her glamorous actress sister, Sadie. He resumes acquaintance with formidable Hugo, whose ‘philosophy’ he once presumptuously dared to interpret. These meetings involve Jake and his eccentric servant-companion, Finn, in a series of adventures that include the kidnapping of a film-star dog, and a political riot in a film-set of ancient Rome. Iris Murdoch seems to have suffered the nightmare fate - for a novelist - of having posthumously become personally more famous than any of her fictions.
‘A Severed Head’ hasn’t aged well:- these days it seems as chintzily swingin’ as a denim cap or John Lennon spectacles - but The Italian Girl, The Bell, and this novel all probably deserve re-visiting.
Thank you, Euripides, for your pebble towards rebuilding the memory of this fine storyteller.
