I suspect that until a reader has understood Middlemarch, he stands very little chance of understanding George Eliot.
And I’m nearly sure that until a reader has understood George Eliot, he is pretty much adrift with the Nineteenth Century, the English novel, probably Britishness, Western Civilisation, and quite possibly mercantile capitalism.
Yet again, Merida769, you turn up with the necessary book, in the best format, to the neediest audience.
Sharing this board with you continues to be a liberal education.

Poor Casaubon, always more sinned against than sinning. At least that is my extremely limited understanding.

@caesar - he’s not a very sympathetic or likeable character Casaubon admittedly, but in the end he’s pretty human in his self centred-ness and myopic inability to see beyond his own concerns, which also makes him the cause of his own suffering. But sinned against? Not really in my view. Will have to have a re read and see what emerges - usually something new each time, sign of a great book!
