Boethius was an eminent public figure under the Gothic emperor Theodoric, and an exceptional Greek scholar. When he became involved in a conspiracy and was imprisoned in Pavia, it was to the Greek philosophers that he turned. THE CONSOLATION was written in the period leading up to his brutal execution. It is a dialogue of alternating prose and verse between the ailing prisoner and his ‘nurse’ Philosophy. Her instruction on the nature of fortune and happiness, good and evil, fate and free will, restore his health and bring him to enlightenment. THE CONSOLATION was extremely popular throughout medieval Europe and his ideas were influential on the thought of Chaucer and Dante.

This is one of your favourites, rmoor, if I recall correctly. Chaucer trans it into Mid English. Boethius himself trans many works into Latin, incl Aristotle. I was just reading abt him a few days ago, in the context of the Ostrogoths.

Past historians have had a hard time accepting a sincere Christian who was also a serious Hellenist.[25] Arnaldo Momigliano argues that “many people have turned to Christianity for consolation. Boethius turned to paganism. His Christianity collapsed—it collapsed so thoroughly that perhaps he did not even notice its disappearance.”

…except, no. Many Christians were Hellenists, and Classicists more broadly. Additionally, St. Paul read the Tanakh in Greek. The gospels were written in Greek (as were the rest of the New Testament writings). Augustine was largely a Platonist, as other Christian scholars were Aristotelian. They were famously motivated by “Athens & Jerusalem,” as we know.
On Arnaldo Momigliano, it ought to be noted that he joined the National Fascist Party & swore loyalty to Mussolini. On his relationship to the Classics, he weirdly believed the Iliad (& Tacitus) to be “among the most dangerous books ever written.”
Regarding Boethius the man, he too was driven by Athens & Jerusalem in his superlative scholarship. Actually reading his brilliant work will serve to remove any simplistic, reductive, expedient doubts.
